Feed is the main component in calculating the cost of production because feed contributes 70-80%. Therefore, feed provides more added value with a high ROI (Return on Investment). The need for good nutrition for layers (laying hens) must be adjusted to the strain and growth physiology of chickens starting from pre-starter, starter, grower, pre-layer, pre-peak, layers 1 and 2. The change of feed refers to body weight, not to age. Then how to understand nutrition, feed additives, and supplements?

Nutrition is a single chemical element, compound, or group of substances contained in feed and functions for growth, maintenance, production, and animal health. Classification of nutrients: water, carbohydrates, proteins, fats, minerals, and vitamins. Nutritional requirements: water, energy, amino acids, fatty acids, minerals, and vitamins

Supplement is something that is added, especially to prevent deficiencies such as amino acid supplements, mineral supplements, and vitamin supplements.

Feed additives are non-nutritional products added to feed to increase speed and/or efficiency, prevent certain diseases or preserve food, there are antibacterials, enzymes, mycotoxin binders, mold inhibitors, chemotherapeutics, organic acids, probiotics & prebiotics, botanicals / phytogenic, carcass modifiers, flavors, aromas, odor reducers, pigments and colorants.

These supplements and feed additives are generally packaged in premix form, and this intends to complement and maintain the nutritional quality of existing feed, either through concentrate or self-mixing. After understanding the classification above, what needs to be considered next is feed formulation. There are so many feed formulation software and all of them have their own strengths, weaknesses, and uniqueness to be compatible with the system they already have, in order to get support in running the business rate and increase the farmer's profit.

However, this sophistication must be supported by the fact of the quality of raw materials received by the warehouse. It is very important to test the content of the raw materials received and the proximate analysis on the complete feed becomes real when connected to the feed formulation software, control is also important as long as this complete feed is applied.
